Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is an important comorbidity for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In COPD patients GERD prevalence is reported between 17–78%. The prevalence of GER was significantly higher in patients with COPD than in those without. GERD is an independent risk factor for COPD exacerbations. It is thought that acid inhibitor treatment may reduce COPD exacerbations.
